It's fast rewind for 28 years for this edition's peep into the past, back in 1976 the road networks were improving fast and traffic congestion was small scale compared to today's regular snarl ups and gridlock! Our photo (left) shows driver (George Gray) in his new Seddon (Grange Marquis) southbound on the M6 at Haydock, en route to Bristol, enjoying a clear run, but being pursued by a fine selection of contemporary British Built family saloon cars!
At home in Grangemouth our new depot at Earls Road continued to develop at a great pace helped no doubt, by one of the hottest summers on record. It was so warm in fact, that the latest fashion must haves; flared trousers, were being rolled up across the country to cope with the soaring temperatures. Other highlights of that year included disco dancing to Abba and the Osmond's in platform shoes, an average weekly wage of £72, the late James Hunt clinching the Formula One world championship and Ronnie Barker keeping us all laughing while serving his 'Porridge'.
The Competition
This time round we're offering our readers the chance to win a Mercedes Benz drivers holdall filled with some quality, three pointed star 'goodies'! If you have read your Grange Courier carefully, you should know the answer!
The Question: What are our trucks named after this year?
Please e-mail your answer to newsdesk@johnmitchell.co.uk before 30th. September 2004. The winner will be drawn at random from the correct entries and the result will be announced in the next newsletter.
Congratulations to Alex Fraser of Grangemouth, whose winning entry was pulled from the mail sack for the framed painting competition in newsletter no. 5. The correct answer was that our containers went to Speyside. By sheer coincidence, Alex is an ex-driver from quite a few years ago and used to drive the sister vehicle of the one featured in the painting!
